Chinese Bronze Buddha Shakyamuni
Charity and Blessing Mudra
Origin: Chinese, Circa: 20th Century
H 11.5 in.(29cm), W 3.5 in.(9cm), D 5 in.(12.5cm)
Aged condition, overall very good! A
standing Historic Buddha Shakyamuni of majestic dignity. His left hand in varada
(charity) mudra, symbolizing the five perfections of generosity, morality, patience,
effort and meditative concentration; and right hand in Abhaya (no-fear) mudra,
which represents protection, courage and dispelling fear.
The statue recalls the Thai Sukhothai style with grace of form and proportion
enhanced by curvilinear notes, the flowing fabric of the monk robe swaying at
the hem as if touched by a slight breeze, complimenting the straight and upright
form of the Buddha. His coiled locks frame and childlike features with prominent
urna, the 31st physical characteristic of Buddha, which radiates wisdom of the
third eye and the power to illuminate the world. The surface presents a darkened
bronze patina with traces of malachite over bronze and is in very good condition.
