A
standing Shakyamuni, the historic Buddha, right hand in varada mudra, the mudra
of charity, generosity and compassion, the extended fingers symbolizing the five
perfections of generosity, morality, patience, effort and meditative concentration.
The work recalls Tang style with grace of form and proportion enhanced by curvilinear
notes, the flowing fabric of the robe swaying at the hem as if touched by a slight
breeze, complimenting the straight and upright form of the Buddha, who holds a
lotus bowl in his left hand and wears a necklace with pendant. His coiled locks
frame the broad volumes of his face, with prominent urna, the 31st physical characteristic
of Buddha, which radiates wisdom and is also a symbol for the third eye and the
power to emit a beam of light to illuminate the world. With the high arching eyebrows,
aquiline nose and slight smile, the work possesses a quality of majestic dignity.
The surface presents a polished sheen on the red fruitwood, which is richly grained
and patterned.
