Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha, the warrior prince Siddhartha Gautama who in the 5th century BCE became fully enlightened. This antique gilt gold silver bronze from 19th century Tibet shows Shakyamuni at the potent moment of his enlightenment. The Buddha’s elegant and highly detailed royal diadem sits atop the traditional tight curls of hair. The gracefully draped robes and mantel are expressed in an intricate design that is a compliment to the sumptuous lotus the Shakyamuni sits upon.

Here with his right hand, the Buddha touches the Mother Earth calling upon her to witness his right to enlightenment. In his left hand, he holds a medicine bowl. At the base of the statue written in Tibetan is the mantra Om Mane Padme Hum. Shakyamuni’s countenance reflects a beatific lucidity and supple fullness. This finely detailed piece is in excellent condition.
