Since the Chinese Han Dynasty (25-220 CE), green-glazed pottery dragons and Guardian lions have been powerful and miraculous protectors that served to safeguard the imperial palaces and tombs. In this finely hand sculpted lustrous rich green Sancai guardian lion, the watchful male lion has one paw tightly gripping on a globe in a classic pose. The creature is majestically rendered, with broad muzzles, jutting fangs, square open jaws, snail curl mane, and a curling yellow tail. The attributes are both ferocious and charming. True to traditional Chinese aesthetics that preserved its force of character, its age-related surface patina built-up adds to the vigorous appearances and mystery in forms. On the lion's head is an export customs' wax seal confirming its antiquity status. This rare green-glazed lion stands in perfect preservation; it's a fine work of art from the Qing and earlier periods.
