Cats are loved in Asia as guardians and defenders of temples and homes. The symbol of the Beckoning Cat 招財貓 is a wealth bestowing charm commonly placed as a centerpiece in businesses and families. Designed as a toggle and brush-rest, this Ming-style recumbent cat with its head turned to the side, forming a cord-hole on the outstretched paws. Its curled long tail extended to the rear with perfect curvature. Large, robust and tactile in round contours with dynamic movements. In pale celadon green with discernible natural infiltration streaks beneath the unctuous usage sheen. Alluring artistry in an archaic form, a highly collectible 19th century or earlier jade specimen.
