Statues of the Bodhisattva of Compassion inspire a greater affection in Japan than do any other Buddhist figures. As in this 19th century Saiko-Kutani 再興九谷 Kannon Bosatsu. The design is based initially on the Guanyin of the Ming period in China. It has been beautifully transformed by a prodigious amount of colors and glaze, with a youthful maiden's spring luminosity in porcelain white. She appears graceful and revered. Her hands casually held together to her side, dressed in floral motifs and silky drapings fluttering in the breeze. The statue is beautifully modeled with exceptional skill, vibrant colors from the Kutani kiln of the 19th century Kaga Province. Masterfully hand-painted in the classical five colors palette known as gosai-de (五彩手). From vermilion red to lavender and blue to emerald green over a silken porcelain surface. Other than what appears to be an old restoration of her left foot, the Kutani Kannon is in excellent condition.
