No idol in China is more universally worshipped than Tsai Shen 財神, the Taoist God of Wealth. Exquisitely carved from a single block of camphor wood, coated and detailed with a unique formula of gesso and saw-dust paste for ultra-fine embossed motifs and ornamental jewel chains that festoon the edges of the deity's robes. The application of lacquer, completed with layers of polychrome and gold leaf finishing, created an effect reminiscent of gilded bronze sculpture. The small carving has a chamber in the back of the statue, evidently he was consecrated in a ritual offering. Despite the age-wears, the statue is radiant with potent energy, a testament to a century of prayers and worship.
