late 19th century polychrome wood Buddha conveys many tales. Go beneath the marks
and passage of time and you see a figure in perfect equipoise and deep peace for
Shakyamuni is the historical Buddha shown in timeless enlightenment. The drape
of the Buddha’s robes are simple yet elegant. His hands are gracefully poised
in the charity mudra. His face exhibits the roundness that is characteristic of
Chinese holy figures. The slight tilt of the head indicates dynamism in the midst
of peace. His bare feet touch the Mother Earth. This is a unique and beautiful
statue that lets time artfully speak its story. (SD)
