This
antique Chinese wood carving depicts a Luohan, one of the Buddha’s original disciples,
in peaceful contemplation. Though significantly aged, the wood has held the lohan’s
shape and spirit, much of the faded paint still clinging to the wood, particularly
along his sash and on the green tips of his shoes. His face is carved in deep
relief, lines of a pleased expression extending from his closed eyes all along
through his face, giving the figure a sense a realism. His head is propped up
by a folded hand, his right arm resting on a chair carved from the stump of a
tree. An engaging statue preserved in fair condition.
