An
early 20th Century wine jar--the label on the front reads “Huang Ju Winery”. Low
fire ceramic with colorful glazing and gold luster, lively depicting the Mad Monk
Ji Gong rising up from the jar. A matte glaze has been used for the figure, on
which details have been applied with a fine touch in the features, the eyebrows
and stubble of the eccentric Buddhist monk who ate meat and drank without restraint
for which he was dismissed from his monastery. Nevertheless his compassion was
such that he spent his days rescuing desperate souls through his incredible exploits;
an examplar of the practice of "letting wine and meat go through the intestines,
while holding fast to Buddha in the heart”
