Mahakala is one of the most revered deities created by Avalokiteshvara. He is the protector of the doctrine and slayer of obstacles to enlightenment, a powerful wealth-bestowing deity in the Buddhist pavilion. Depicted as the Lord of Time, Mahakala is surrounded by an aureole of raging flames, standing in an active warrior pose, baring fangs and tongue, with eyebrows patterned in upturned waves above a furrowed nose. He is wearing a five-pointed crown around his flaming orange hair, with three bulging eyes that symbolize his clarity and perception of the Three Worlds. He has a jewel-spiting mongoose resting in his left hand and a blood-filled kapala (skull bowl) in his right, representing his power to transform negative elements. With an intertwining necklace and a snake that swirls around his naked body, he stands above a moon disk pedestal with 11 triple lotus petals. The fierce Guardian of Dharma is victoriously dancing on a peta against a blazing fire halo, a sign that pristine wisdom is supreme above both samsara and nirvana.
