In Chinese astrology and myth, the sighting of the meteor Tengu 天狗 is the harbinger of war. Since it was transmitted to Japan in the 7th century, Tengu is gradually transformed into a beneficial bird spirit, and the metamorphose of the Shinto mountain deity Yama-No-Kami 山の神. The Tengu was once portrayed as the enemies of Buddhism. Over the centuries, the character of Tengu gradually evolved into many benevolent versions. The long-nose Hanataka Tengu 鼻高天狗 is noticeably wearing the wandering samurai Yamabushi's distinctive cap and monk robe.
