The Jue is among the most ancient Chinese bronzes appearing from the Erlitou class site (c. 1900-1500 BCE) until sometime in the Western Zhou period (c. 11th century-771 BCE). It was made for offerings to divinities and used for drinking and libations at rituals and sacrifices throughout the millennia in China.

This large Fang Jue features four flared legs splayed outward from a flat base, a dragon head on the strap handle, four taotie masks in high relief on a square body, and two taotie masks at the short round neck, accompanied with crisp decorative patterns filling the contrastive ground up to its spouts on two sides. There are several Jinzi 金字 (pictogram) inscriptions on the base. The entire vessel has a rich bronze patina varying from malachite green to azurite in earthy red throughout. Despite its high-quality artistry and patina, without scientific testing, this timeless beauty is tentatively attributed to a mid-century Chinese museum creation.
