Antique Chinese Schist Stone Carving
Quan Yin
Sitting in Half Lotus

Mid-late Qing Dynasty, circa: 18-19th century
h.18n.(46cm.) X w.10in.(25cm.) X d.7.5 in.(19cm.)
Condition: Good

An animated Quan Yin, seated on a double lotus throne in a pose of relaxation. Enlivened by the many curving lines of her hair and flowing garments she presents an approachable informality. Her earthy smile and downward-looking eyes seem to regard the world in an attitude of curious appraisal. The work displays the artist’s command of the material in its compact design and rhythmic surface ornamentation, which contribute to the overall lightness of mood. The surface is even and consistent, the color is the dark hue of schist.
