Catch Ghost
by the Throat
Signature: Mitsuyuki, circa: early
20th Century Recorded
artist in "Netsuke A Comprehensive Study Based On The M T Hindson Collection"
by Neil Davey #1655 H
2 in.(5cm.), W 1.25 in.(3cm.), D 1 in.(2.5cm.)
Condition: very good ! A
fine expressive netsuke depicting Shoki with a struggling ghost in his grasp.
Variegated cream to honey colors, marked with striations and layering, well carved
and polished to a silky finish, engraved with geometric, foliate and sword motifs
in black and brown ink with traces of blue pigment. Though Shoki is most often
seen disciplining oni, his legendary strength and stature make him the nemesis
of all demons and ghosts. Private Collection |
