A
Shojo drinking deeply from a wine filled dish, his flaming red hair and indication
of his orangutan lineage. This signed netsuke is skillfully detailed, from the
bubble motif on the Shojo’s dress to the swirling bowl of wine being tipped back
by the smiling karako. More remarkable, the carved through elephant tusk ivory
creates a wealth of shadows falling onto her lap, continuing the long standing
tradition of Japanese carvers creating depth through subtle detail, detail under
arms and between the spaces we forget to look. Signed Tomokazu, a mid 19th century
carver from the Tomochika and Chikuyosai Schools, this is a beautiful piece in
excellent condition.
