fine antique netsuke in cream white, well marked with striations and showing a
golden patina in the crevices on the front and on the bottom. Depicting a court
drummer, corpulent and handsomely attired in feather embroidered robe over a geometric
patterned inner garment which is visible only under the open seams at the shoulders.
He holds up a drum which he sounds with his right hand. His face is sensitively
modeled with a distinctive profile and an affable expression; on his head is a
type of headgear worn in the imperial court. Signed on the bottom without reserve:
Shuichi.
