Chinese Roof tiles shaped in dragons and deities are frequent on large houses. They are placed on ridges and roof edges as guardians and protectors of public buildings and private homes. Their chief purpose is to produce an auspicious aura, which creates a positive cosmic current that foster a positive Feng Shui. This antique Qing Dynasty Sancai roof tile features a well-preserved Lokapala, Vairocana Golden Guardian Ha, protector of the faith from hostile spirits and malevolent energies. The figure is robust with exaggerated traits typical of a demon-repelling champion, seen in an aggressive display of strength. He stands firmly with legs wide stretched, his feet firmly planted on the cylindrical roof tile gripping the structure like iron cords. The guardian figure represents the power of pristine wisdom to dispel all obstructions to Buddha's consciousness. The fine modeling and lustrous, rich sancai colors intensify the movement that animates this forceful work.
