According to the rule of the Shogunate and the Bushido Shoshinshu (the Code of the Samuraii) a samurai was ordered to commit oibara seppuku (also "hara kiri" (ritual suicide) upon the loss of his master. There were however, those who defied the code. These were the ronin abound men who shaped their own destiny and set their own rules. This breed of self made men independent of the system ranged from the magnificent such as the legendary and noble Miyamoto Musashi, author of the "Book of Five Ring" to true rascals.

Private Collection

This 19th century Mejii era ivory is most curious in that evokes an almost playful state of staged martial art acrobatics. Three armored samurai tousle and rousle over what appears to be an elegant silk kimono. The fully armored samurai appear to have been on the road (one carries a woven wicker travel basket on his back). The detail in the statue evokes amazing intricacy. The samurai' faces are rendered in classically characteristic countenances that you will find in Kabuki theater and many ukiyo-e wood block prints. The armor and ornamentation is all finely rendered as are distinctive details like the inside palm of the hand and the inset of bare feet. The centrifugal force evoked in this piece makes this much more than a still-life. This is an active mise-en-scene a moment in time exceptionally captured by the artist. This 19th century ivory is signed Amagyuko. The okimono is in fair condition with minor imperfections from years handling. (SD)
