| Two
smiling actors dancing and drumming. One holds a fan in his right hand, another
lifts two arms raising the tsuzumi above his shoulder. Their whimsical countenances
are full of mirth, giving the impression of a celebration in a veritable show
of abundance. This triangular shaped narwhal ivory netsuke is fully rounded to
a complex, yet tactile design with intricate details and no extruding parts. It
depicts a lavish mood and two distinctive ebullient personalities at play. Graceful
in style and rich in expressive subtleties, stella artistry in an ingenious little
gem. The netsuke is beautifully signed in cursive Kanji: Ryugyoku (1789-1829),
he also used the go: Sansui, (As listed in the MT Hindson Collection #2229 by
NK Davey, and The art of the Netsuke Carvers by Meinertzhagen.) He is praised
as a rare and competent artist in the School of Garaku.
