A
celestial Kuan Yin in posture of royal ease, seated upon a rocky promontory above
lapping waves, accompanied by her worshipful companion, Red Boy, and holding a
vase containing the water of life, which she pours out to ease the suffering of
sentient beings. Her right hand is lifted to her cheek in a pensive gesture recalling
the late Three Kingdoms Korean style. Behind her head is a flaming mandorla supporting
a bird holding a string of pearls in its beak. Kuan Yin’s hooded robe falls in
curves and swirls to the lotus plants that rise up to meet her. The surface is
generally matte in appearance; where the statue has been handled it is smoothed
and richly colored.
