Boy Catching Tanuki Child Netsuke

A small carving in cream colored ivory, very fine grained with a burnished surface which shows wear from handling despite the fact that it was at some time mounted on its wood base to preserve it. A boy crouches over a tanuki, a creature as whimsical and mischievous as any child, and more wily. The piece possesses an intimate charm in the delicate rendering of details and the puppy-like characterization of the tanuki.
