Japanese Carved Okimono Quail
Fighter Preparing
Quails for Fight Signed:
Ryugyoku. Circa: Meiji, late 19th century h.5.5
in(14cm), w.2.25 in(5.5 cm), d.2.25 in(5.5 cm)
Condition Excellent! A
meiji period okimono remarkable for its preservation, considering its intricacy
of design. A prosperous peasant figure with two quail holds a few stems of millet
to incite the birds to combat. Well carved from a single piece of cream colored
ivory, the work is highly detailed, the man’s apparel complete with inro and netsuke,
finely edged draped and fluttering robes incised with geometric patterns and embroideries
represented on a crinkle-textured silk, the hair delineated with close parallel
engraving, with representation of the basketry particularly fine and unbroken.
