H 6.5 in. (16.5cm) W 11.5 in. (29cm), D 6 in. (15cm)
Condition: gilt loss, overall very good!
An antique original gilt cast Chinese bronze tiger. Vigorously modeled in proportions and form, with bold delineation and pronounced definitions of shapely engraved stripes. In the traditional theme of a prowling tiger descending downhill and emerging into plain sight with all its ferocity. Lively crouching forward with head turned in a snarl. Staring ahead with bulging eyes, flared nostrils, rolling tongue, and bared teeth in an open jaw, ears hovered back against the row of mane. The tiger has incited a sense of both awe and admiration throughout Chinese history. Such an image symbolizes the warrior class, and is considered a powerful talisman to repel evil spirits and negative forces. The cast features the majestic character of the king of the beast to mythical proportion. Extensive gilt loss, otherwise highly expressive and impeccably finished. The Year of Tiger is 2022, the third of the 12-year zodiac cycle of animals that greeted the Buddha after his enlightenment.
