Japanese Carved Netsuke Zodiac
Monkey Holding
Peach signature: Gyokuseki,
Circa: 1900S' H. 1.75 in.(4.5cm),
W. 1.2 in.(3cm), D. 1.2 in.(3cm) Condition:
excellent! A
wistful expression and a tactile furry pelt are charming characteristics of this
antique Japanese netsuke zodiac monkey. He is caught, sequestered and surprised.
The monkey’s forepaws curl into tight fists, with supple nearly human fingers.
On his left, he holds a well endowed, beautifully shaped, single peach accented
by several over-sized leaves that tangle and fall organically down his side to
twist and twine with his rambunctious tail. The bottoms of his tightly crossed
feet reveal expressive tender soles. Plump and tactile, monkey, the
netsuke is stained a warm, highly polished amber that enhances the finely rendered
hairlines of the pelt. Signed Gyokuseki, on the bottom right paw, this netsuke
is in excellent condition. (SD) Sold
