A
tea stained netsuke carved from walrus tusk with dense grain and varied colored
surface, small patches of rustic brown on the back. An unsigned Tokyo school netsuke
with detailed elements, soft flowing robe and defined hairlines, child-like facial
features crossed with bulging eyes in an allusion of devilish charms. Here the
oni priest is seen striking a gong with his umbrella handle, travels about barefooted
with three-clawed toes and horns poking out... as Japanese legend is replete with
stories that characterize oni as wickedly troublesome, and capable of a variety
of misadventures.
