Hannya mask netsuke by Shigeyoshi is a fine little gem. It faithfully reproduced
the Namanaris Mask of the Noh theatre; except that the full scale version would
have been painted in polychrome, with hallowed out eye sockets for seeing on the
Noh stage. The Hannya mask portrays the vengeful spirit of a jealous woman. Her
large eyes, small horns and fangs indicate the transformation of human into Hannya...a
female demon. Private Collection | |
