Japanese Antler Netsuke Blind
Traveler
Knapsag On Shoulder
Netsuke Signature: Unsigned, 18th-19th Century
H 2 in.(5cm.), W 0.5in.(1.25cm), D 0.5in.(1.25cm)
Condition: usage worn, o.a. good This
little netsuke, which is neatly carved into a pleasingly compact shape, is so
harmonious in itself that it almost appears to be a natural object. The age of
this netsuke and its apparent constant use has mellowed and smoothed the surface
until only the deepest lines remain, with a vigor that emphasizes the graphic
quality of the work. The deep patina in the recessions is the darkest velvety
brown; the highlights are a satiny semi-matte cream color with a golden wash,
depicting a traveler standing with his staff and knapsack. All important details
are still visible, including hatching of straw on the woven hat. An appealing
and venerable carving with all the signs of age and use which are so highly valued
in authentic netsuke. Private Collection |
