One
of the seven immortals, the Sennin, Fukurukuju is the Japanese god of wealth happiness
and longevity. This 19th century ivory netsuke depicts him with a luxuriant beard,
long flowing robes and a royal fan of rank. His highly expressive face is both
wise and exuberant. At his side is a young attendant who holds a scroll of wisdom.
Additionally, the soles of the sandals of each figure are rendered with detail.
This is a playful ivory is an excellent example of the artistry from the period.
