The
Dutch monopolized foreign trade with Japan in the Edo Period and were regulated
to Dejima, an trading post island in the middle of Nagasaki bay. The Dutch were
only allowed to travel to the main islands under guard and on special royal appointment.
This
early 20th century ivory netsuke is typical Japanese portrayal of a foreigner.
Tall with curly hair the figure has lanky, even over-sized arms and legs. This
Dutchman is dressed in Western dress, although his coat exhibits traditional Japanese
design motifs in the patterning. At first glance he looks benevolent, his hand
holds his hat perhaps getting ready to lift it in greeting, but on closer inspection
we see there is a scabbard with a sheathed sword slung across his front. His left
hand holds a bow tucked behind his back. The
netsuke signature Shugyoku on the lower backside. (SD)
