Condition: cracklines and lost, overall good! In
this beautifully carved netsuke, two Japanese Macaque monkeys are seen fighting
for a couple of peaches. The composition is strikingly animated, with flowing
fur and splendid facial expressions, one monkey is looming over another with a
tight grip on its neck, while the acquiescent underdog is holding the peaches
screaming with an opened mouth, with one hand he is fighting back by pulling the
ear of his attacker. The peach stem appears chipped long ago, and there is a minor
loss on the thigh, an age crack clearly visible on the base. True to Japanese
esthetic, the work is admirably carved and breathtakingly powerful. The netsuke
is tactile, with a milk white to light cream surface; an exceptional work of art. Private Collection
