Antique
Japanese Netsuke Monkey
On Large Peach
Unsigned.
Circa: Edo, Early 19th Century h.
1.5 in.(4cm), w. 1.25 in.(3cm), d. 1 in.(2.5cm)
condition: usage worn, o.a. very good A
classic antique netsuke, carved from the tip of the tusk, compactly pyramidal
in shape, densely grained, cream to gold in color, deep age patina on the back
with Schreger lines, blue crack lines and evidence of wear, the contours smoothed
from handling over time. A realistically rendered monkey, with nicely carved hair
lines undoubtedly once filled with sumi, sits eating atop an upturned peach, the
stem and leaves curving up from the bottom. Design and artistry of the piece are
consistent with early style netsuke, imbued with the directness and vigor of an
object created for everyday use. A satin gloss finish overall.
