Virupaksha On Lion

Guardian King South Virudhaka

Private Collection

Virudhaka the Guardian King of the South is the Patron of Growth.

With the other Lokapalas (Guardian Kings) he said to protect and set the energy of the four directions in temples and palaces. This antique marble statue from the 14th century Ming Dynasty carries a sword and sits atop a lion that gazes directly up at him. Virudhaka is in full amour and his powerful gaze conveys strength, fierceness and steady navigation. This statue beautifully marked by time is powerful evocation of the deity.
