Also
known as Kaliha or Kalika, he rules over the Lion region, supposed to be Ceylon,
and has a retinue of a thousand arhats. He usually sits in meditation with his
books and has extremely long eyebrows which he holds up from the ground. He is
seen here distracted by a little lion-dog who is tugging at one of the eyebrows
as if it were a rope. A whimsical representation in mammoth ivory which is creamy
in color on the front and bearing large areas of darker material on the back.
Such dramatic variations are not unusual in mammoth ivory. This piece is nicely
marked with striations and is a well carved representation in a lighter vein. |
