A
substantial Laughing Buddha, carved in 22 ounces of quality Asian ivory, marked
with striations and cross hatching, cream to honey in color, deepening at the
back to dark gold, the massive body well carved with details and undercuts at
the mala and fingertips. This conception of the Laughing Buddha is extremely popular
and countless versions may be seen, however in this work the quality of the artistry
is outstanding, full of spirit and animated with an irrepressiblly mirthful individuality
that brings alive the abundant benevolence of the Buddha. Inscription reads “Quinglong”
recalling the style of carving of that prosperous 18th century Qing dynasty.
