A highly collectible incense burner from a square-shaped body gradually tapered into a circular form, richly gilded in gold with distinctive enamel trims and transparent glaze over crackle creamy white ground. Elaborately painted traditional motifs densely surrounding two figures, the Goddess of Mercy Kannon Bosatsu and a Rakan, the Buddha's saintly disciple. As the painting's breathtaking intricacy reflects an accomplished artist's work, equally impressive is the potter's superb technique that transformed the square-shaped koro into a tapered circular form. Signed in kanji script: Kiyoyama, 清山. The Satsuma koro is attributed to the Taisho period.
