Avalokiteshvara is the bodhisattva of infinite compassion, present in all beings regardless of race, creed, or past actions. Fundamentally, this is not outside ourselves but is the essence of who we are, a boundless universe within, revealed when we see with wisdom and feel with compassion. This finely wrought large Qing bronze, exquisitely cast in solid bronze with brilliant gold gilding on a copper-alloy base, represents Avalokiteshvara in princely attire, seated in the Royal Ese (Lalitasana Mudra) above a tiger-pelt lotus pedestal, tightly sealed with a viswavajra copper plate. The Bodhisattva of Compassion is depicted wearing a five-leaf diadem crowning his triple chignon with parallel hairlines, adorned with jeweled earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and floating celestial scarves. His left hand rests on a raised knee, with articulated fingers displaying the teaching gesture (Vitarka Mudra) in each hand. The symmetric simplicity of the design is complemented by his head leaning to the left, adding movement to its living quality and sculptural depth. Coupled with the statue's robust casting, the bronze surface is distinguished by an aged natural patina and evocative gilt wear that are wholly commensurate with the artistic rigor of the 18th-century Kangxi period (康熙).
