Antique
carving in black jade, with mineral and crystalline encrustations and patina of
age. A well carved representation of Quan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion and Mercy,
attired in hooded robe and crown with the symbol of Amitabha , of whom she is
an emanation. A mysterious presence is in the work; the eyes look out, the robes
fall softly to her feet, the carving is lyrical and attentive to detail, she holds
up her right hand in varada mudra, the gesture of no fear, a wisdom pearl in her
fingers. Her left hand holds a prayer mala as she stands in a posture of upright
gentleness, her profile serene and beautiful.
