This elegantly carved skeleton pair is a superb specimen of a early 20th century netsuke. Which depicts conceptualized skeletons of two deceased souls. The standing figure is likely to be the servant of Emma-O, and the kneeling figure is a newly deceased man praying for mercy in front of the King of Hell. Unlike many produced under a single prototype, this is one rare design with only a few netsuke found in known collection. This fascinating ivory netsuke is signed Keido, a late Meiji era artist with rare output.
