Nio, or Temple Guardian, carved from quality walrus tusk, with its characteristic
hardness and highly translucent surface; wavy markings and osteodentine visible.
Engraving with sumi. Well carved muscular figure advancing threateningly to subdue
demons and enemies of the Dharma, with flying celestial scarves and robes embellished
with embroideries, holding in his left hand the thunderbolt, symbol of strength,
immovability, and the adamantine wisdom of transcendence. The work is animated,
dynamic and thoroughly finished front and back.
