An animated depiction of a monkey trainer tricked by his mischievous companion, who, while sitting comfortably perched upon his trusting master’s shoulder, has taken the opportunity to exploit the moment and has grabbed the man’s beard, giving it a good yank. The piece has a charming quality of fun and affection, for although the man is taken by surprise he does not appear to be angry. The piece is well carved in tusk tip ivory, marked with striations, lightly stained, and polished to a high hand finish.
