Antique
Japanese Floral Netsuke Magic
Mushroom
Stained Ivory
Signature: unsigned, Circa: 19th Century H
1.8" (5cm.), W 1.5" (4cm.), D 0.75" (2cm.)
Condition: excellent Regardless
of the botanical specifics of this piece, the organic quality of the fungus, or
leaf, form is intriguing. The ivory has been stained to a warm caramel color.
In the corrugations and curling edges the suggestion of the short-lived fruitful
season is intimated and tenderly wrought. Finely engraved and scalloped leaf forms,
veins and stem are polished to an unctuous moistness. One small hole on the underside
for attaching the cord is discreetly hidden under the bent loop of the stem. A
mysterious and poetic rendering of transience. Private Collection! |
