This
intricate mammoth fossil ivory carving depicts Kwan Yin in style established in
the Tang Dynasty. At the height of only five inches, the unknown artist who created
this ivory carving has succeeded in bringing out the beloved Bodhisattva in full
depth, and masterfully preserved the natural charm in the uncarved portion of
the mammoth ivory. His artistry brings to us that this ivory Kwan Yin is at home
on a rocky shore at Mount Potalaka (Chinese pilgrims believed that Putuo Island
was Kwan Yin's celestial home); seated in the meditation position of royal ease,
her left hand holds a magic whisker and right hand rests gently on her bent knee.
She is dressed in a fluidly carved gown with jewels delicately rendered across
her chest.
This
mammoth ivory carving is quite old. The superb artisan style, age cracks and natural
golden color leads us to believe that she was carved in Qing Dynasty (1644-1912),
possibly around late 18th century. For reference purpose; though hardly noticeable,
please note that there was a repair on the canopy. A custom designed burl wood
base is also included.
