This 19th century Chinese maiden is elegantly wrought from head-to-toe. Elegantly placed on a carved wood lotus, she has a highly detailed coiffure of multiple plaits. Her robes are simple but elegant speaking to the beauty of a spring day when the heat is just beginning to rise. In her hands she carefully holds a sheng a classical Chinese instrument consisting of a bundle of between 17 to 36 pipes seated on a small wind chamber. This classic instrument creates haunting sounds--- evocative of nature and the play of human elation and longing. This exquisite stature speaks through its simplicity and the quality of artistry.
