With pipe and duster in hand, an older gentleman seated on a Scholar's rock is a common theme in Chinese art. It represents the cultivation of harmony and wisdom so honored in Chinese culture, qualities in particular associated with the golden years. The mid size statue is 5" height and weight 9oz. It is a fine example of the simple elegance in Ming style carving. It appears to be carved from a quality Asian tusk, finely polished with a even shine. The ivory has a beautiful cream white color and is in excellent condition.
