Indian Bronze Devata Goddess
Playing Cymbal Instrument
Tamilnadu, circa: 17th-18th century H
18in.(46cm.), W 6.5 in.(16.5cm.), D 5in.(12.5cm.)
Condition: excellent preservation
Poised
gracefully upon a drop leaf double lotus base, this figure admirably displays
the lush sensibility of images of the divine feminine that are characteristic
of the period. Compared to earlier figures, the features of her broader face are
more defined; the outlines of her slim body more curvilinear. Her breasts have
grown in substance, and her hips in rounded contours framing a higher waistline.Though
these differences are subtle, the stylistic coherence of this bronze is attributed
to the period of the 17-18th century.
Private Collection
The
goddess stands in animated tribhanga posture holding a cymbal in her left hand
and an unknown attribute in the other. Her smiling face is pronounce and sublime
in expression. There is a divine feminine charm radiates as the eye moves over
the piece, the solidity relieved by small openings through the earrings, through
thumb and forefinger and between the ankles at the base. A naturally aged satiny
chocolate patina covers the metal, adding to the mythical beauty of the work.
The Devata is adorned with jeweled necklaces, armbands, bracelets and a girdle
from which hang tassled cords. She wears a diaphanous dhoti which is delicately
hand chased with stylized floral designs. A rare and important specimen of Hindu
art.
