Ebisu Catching Fish Netsuke

An exceptionally well carved netsuke by an outstanding Meiji era artist. The design concept and the technical mastery shown in the pruden simplicity of forms, and exact details with ebullient expressiveness in the firmly carved figures-- Ebisu, is artfully portrayed with portrait-quality features, he is seen crouching over a giant carp with tail raised, and wrapping around him in a tactile and dynamic composition. The netsuke is beautifully proportioned, well preserved natural material in light cream color. Two himotoshi are on the bottom near the engraved signature: Masatsugu.
