Excellent Masachika
was the adopted son of grand master Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (08/13/1829 - 01/21/1892),
who was celebrated for his exceedingly beautiful netsuke carvings. In particular,
his famous Mizaru monkey netsuke design which was copied both in the East and
West. This monkey netsuke by Masachika is an outstanding piece. Aside from its
intricate but restrained carving technique, the superb design is both tactile
and lively for its purpose. Like his master, the himotashi are two natural openings
between the monkey's arms and legs. It would be fair to conclude that through
this netsuke, Masachika has succeeded in transcending his master Kaigyokusai's
superb artistry. Though little is know of his life, Masachika was later inherited
the business of his natural father; which limited the output of his netsuke, and
its availability is few and far in between both in Japan and abroad. |
