Krishna is a major deity worshiped as the eighth avatar of the god Vishnu and also as the supreme God in Hinduism. His iconography reflects the legend first as a divine-child, a prankster, a gopis lover, a divine hero, and as the universal supreme being; which is beautifully portrayed in this early 20th-century statue with its fabulous South Indian classic style. As the God-child Krishna eating butter, the power of the deity pours through in the rendering of allegorical masculinity. The carving communicates the revere passion in single-pointed concentration, with tensions between the rough-hewn artistry and the power and presence of the deity that makes this sorcerous Krishna statue most compelling.
