Han
Zhong-li, the elder of the Taoist Eight Immortals is said to be a general in the
Han Dynasty (206-220 BC). When he was defeated by the Tibetan army in an military
expedition, he fled into the mountain and met an immortal who transmitted the
secret of Tao to him. Here he is seen standing above a longevity peach on one
foot, with inlaid eyes and teeth gleaming on a benevolent smiling face, holding
a large fan in both hands which are raised above his shoulders. The Qing style
corbel carving is lively and fluid in motions. A perfect matching pair to the
Zhang Gaolao wood carving.
